Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated over 150 years ago. They were first created by the crewmen of lightship vessels as a way to pass time at sea. They feature distinctive rattan or cane hand woven onto wooden molds with wooden bases. The handbags are decorated with carved or scrimshawed pieces.

Ms. Bessette's baskets have been photographed for many national magazines as well as a full page photo that appeared in The New York Times of her backpack basket. Lisa Bessette is a native Cape Codder who grew up in Woods Hole in the shadow of Nobska Lighthouse. She and her husband Bill reside in the beautiful town of Sandwich with their daughter, twin sons.
